Research
Psychology applied to music and health
A commitment to evidence and rigorous communication in mental health.
One of our research areas explores the psychological variables that may negatively influence the process of musical performance in the Spanish population.
First research project (2019–2020)
Our first research project, conducted at a national level, focused on studying the correlation between the following variables in professional musicians:
- Coping styles
- Stage anxiety
- Quality of life
- Possible physical symptoms
More specifically, the main research objective was: To identify the coping style and stage-anxiety dimension that indicate a greater predisposition to manifest the first symptoms of musician's dystonia.
Sample and instruments
The majority of the participant sample (n=79) were musicians whose principal instrument belonged to the wind, string, or keyboard families.
The assessment instruments included the KPMAI-E Inventory: Stage anxiety (Kenny, 2011) and the Brief COPE-28 Questionnaire: Coping styles (Carver, 1997).
Key results
Among the results, we highlight the significant correlation between avoidant coping style and general psychological vulnerability and worry about performance — factors associated with the second dimension of stage anxiety in Kenny's (2004) explanatory model.
Conclusions and prevention plans
At Kizuna Psicología we promote prevention plans that help musicians reduce the perceived intensity of stress in response to the specific stressors generated during their academic or professional career.
